Myofunctional Therapy

Supporting oral function, feeding, breathing, and airway health

https://sydneyoralfunction.janeapp.com/

Myofunctional Therapy focuses on the muscles of the mouth, face, and airway-and how they impact feeding, breathing, sleep, and development.

Oral dysfunction can show up early and affect far more than we realize.  My role is to help identify and support these patterns with gentle, functional care.

What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional Therapy addresses how the tongue, lips, jaw, and facial muscles function at rest and during movement. When these muscles are not working optimally, it can affect feeding, breathing, dental development, sleeping, and overall wellness.

Therapy is individualized, developmentally appropriate, and focused on long-term function.

Myofunctional Therapy May Help With:

  • Mouth breathing
  • Low tongue posture
  • Tongue thrust
  • Poor lip seal
  • Nasal breathing difficulties
  • Snoring & sleep-disordered breathing
  • Mild obstructive sleep apnea support
  • Speech sound concerns
  • Swallowing dysfunction
  • Chewing difficulties
  • Drooling
  • Thumb sucking & prolonged pacifier habits
  • Oral habits (chewing on clothing, pencils, etc.)
  • Tongue tie compensation patterns
  • Feeding difficulties in infants & children
  • Breastfeeding challenges related to oral function
  • TMJ tension & jaw discomfort
  • Orthodontic stability & relapse prevention
  • High/narrow palate concerns
  • Facial muscle weakness
  • Poor oral rest posture
  • Picky eating related to oral motor function
  • Forward head posture related to airway patterns

Tongue-Tie & Functional Support

Tongue-Tie is not just an anatomical issue-it's a functional one.

I provide pre-and post-release myofunctional support, helping prepare oral tissues and guide healing ad function afterward.   this can improve outcomes and support feeding, breathing, and oral development.

Care may include:

*  Oral function assessment

*  Personalized exercise

*  Parent education

*  Collaboration with dental, medical, and bodywork providers

Common Goals of Therapy

  • Proper tongue resting posture
  • Lips closed comfortably at rest
  • Improved nasal breathing
  • Coordinated chewing & swallowing
  • Better tongue mobility & strength
  • Improved oral muscle tone
  • Support for healthy facial growth & airway development

Who Can Benefit?

Myofunctional therapy can benefit infants, children, teens, and adults depending on their goals and symptoms. Therapy is often collaborative with lactation consultants, pediatric dentists, ENTs, orthodontists, speech therapists, chiropractors, bodyworkers, and airway-focused providers.

A Gentle, Whole-Body Approach

Myofunctional Therapy is never one-size-fits all.  I take a collaboration, trauma-informed approach that considers posture, breathing, feeding, and development as interconnected systems.

Care is:

*  Evidence-based

*  Gentle and Supportive

*  Centered towards all ages

*  Focused on sustainable progress

Is Myofunctional Therapy Right for You or Your Child?

If you're unsure, that's okay.   Many families begin with an assessment to explore whether myofunctional therapy may be supportive for your personal needs.
